Book Review: Burn Out by Ruthi Kight & Giveaway!

Ten years ago Delia’s life went up in smoke. Literally. After a decade of hiding, she is forced back into the world. With only her wits to guide her, she must now figure out how to live in a town that knows her only as a murderer. Her family is gone. The people all fear her. She has nothing holding her in Sunny Shores…until she meets Liam. He’s heard the stories. He knows he should stay away from her, but he’s drawn to her like a moth to a flame.

Life seems to be looking up for them…until her past comes back like a bitch slap to the face.

Delia is quite an interesting character. The book begins with her in a mental institution. She plays chicken with her therapist…and everyone else who is authority above her. She swears like a sailor…actually, no – she would make a sailor blush in a swearing contest.

And then there’s the fact that she runs around like a chihuahua in heat. Constantly. Although she swears she’s a virgin. But she is one, messed-up piece of work. She’s strongly independent to the point of being hard-headed and her love interest has his own baggage as well. There is no knight in shining armor in this story, and Delia isn’t the most gentile of southern belles.

Overall, I felt that the excessive swearing was way overdone – as if for shock value. The sex scenes were also surprising, but not necessarily in a good way. More like an ewwww…gross kind of way for me. But then I am an admitted reader of clean fiction and this one is far from clean. Afterward, I needed a shower. Of course, when I picked up this book, I knew I what I was getting into…sort of. It is clearly labeled as New Adult. But I guess I just hope for too much when I hope for sex to be a product of love instead of lust. *sigh* And my weigh in on the ending? (There’s much debate on goodreads over this, and the author even included a note to justify her end.) I agree that the book ended appropriately for the characters involved.

This book won’t be for all, but some will surely enjoy the angst, lust, and mystery.
